The Joy of Natural Navigation
Clues and Signs in Sussex & the South Downs with Tristan Gooley

Join Sussex based author Tristan Gooley for an evening of natural navigation as he describes how he learnt to find his way using the sun, moon, stars, weather, plants, animals and buildings. Gooley has used the ancient techniques of natural navigation in the desert, on ice, in the jungle, on mountains, on oceans, in cities and in the English countryside and he explains how natural navigation can enrich all journeys, large and small.
Everyone who comes will learn the basic principles of how to make a map and compass from nature, including essential gems like how to make a map out of a rainbow and how to find a pub using a butterfly. Tristan passionately believes that natural navigation is not just a practical skill, but also the key to a much deeper and richer understanding of our environment. Be warned, it is slightly addictive.

This beautifully illustrated talk will include lots of clues from Sussex and the South Downs.

Tristan set up his natural navigation school in 2008 and is the author of the award-winning and bestselling books, The Natural Navigator (2010), The Walker’s Guide to Outdoor Clues & Signs (2014), How to Read Water(2016) and Wild Signs and Star Paths (2018), some of the world’s only books covering natural navigation.
